A bronchoscopy involves using a narrow, lighted tube (bronchoscope) to view directly into the lungs' airways. The mouth or nose is used to insert the bronchoscope. It travels into the airways through the trachea, the windpipe that runs down the throat. The trachea, bronchi, the main airways leading to the lungs, and bronchioles, which are tiny branches of the bronchi, can then be seen by a medical professional. A bronchoscope comes in two varieties: flexible and stiff. The widths of the two varieties differ. A straight tube is called a rigid bronchoscope. It is limited to viewing the main airways. The flexible bronchoscope is typically utilized instead of the rigid bronchoscope. This is because there is less chance of tissue damage with the flexible type. The flexible kind is also easier for people to deal with. Additionally, it offers improved access to the lung tissue's tiny sections. You might need to use a breathing machine prior to the treatment if you have severe dyspnea or high blood carbon dioxide levels (hypercapnia). This allows oxygen to enter your lungs directly while the bronchoscope is in position.
